JENNY WHEELER

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

Hipster. Antique. Vibrant. Faded.

Not the latest style or a band name. Those are photo filters in one of my apps. And I rarely post a picture without one.

Editing shadows, softening blemishes or unsightly details has become the new "reality" in an Instagram- and Facebook-riddled culture. I don't particularly enjoy showing my flaws to the world. Who does?! No real harm, right?

With something as trivial as social media, sure. But I wonder if the edits to appear "picture-perfect" might be causing me to miss the bigger picture.

It's not easy to admit, but it's nonetheless true: I usually put better filters on my selfies than I do on my heart.

Fixing the not-so-lovely details is easy to do with an app, but it's a little harder in this broken world. Deep down, I know I should be more focused on what I'm taking in — who I'm becoming. When I quiet the noise of social media and get alone with the Lord, I'm reminded that my heart, not my appearance or what I project to the world, is what matters most. Sometimes my actions just don't line up with my intentions though. Have you been there, too?

The wise author of Proverbs understood the importance of guarding the heart — the soul — the most precious part of who God created us to be. He reveals such a powerful truth when he implores, "Above all else, guard your heart …" (Proverbs 4:23a).

The eternal piece of us … what Christ came to redeem and inhabit.

Why? Because "everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23b).

Everything?

Everything.

Actions. Thoughts. Feelings. Emotions. Passions. Drive. Hopes.

Every. Single. Little. Thing.

In biblical wisdom, the heart is viewed as the core of human existence — the center of our spirituality and true essence of who we are. The heart is also compared to a well from which all we think, feel and do flows. This makes it abundantly clear: What we allow into our hearts matters. A lot.

If we aren't careful to guard what goes into that sacred space, we're in danger of being polluted by muck that has the potential to steer our hearts away from the very One who fashioned us. All that is true, honest, lovely, pure, holy, godly: Those are the things we should allow to shape the most intimate part of our being. Everything else should be edited, cropped or filtered out.

But how do we safeguard our hearts? Philippians 4:6-7 gives us three powerful tools in the Apostle Paul's instructions: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (ESV).

Prayer, supplication (requests) and thanksgiving is the 1-2-3 punch God has given us to effectively protect our hearts. When we talk to God, wisdom for decisions is available in abundance. By letting prayer, petitions and thanksgiving lead, our hearts are then rooted in a place of peace, safety and connection with Truth.

Sometimes Pain Is a Good Thing

Sometimes Pain Is a Good Thing
KENISHA BETHEA

"Don't you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can't you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?" Romans 2:4 (NLT)

My friend limped into the doctor's office, barely able to move the offending leg; I went along for support.

"Where does it hurt?" her doctor probed. "What happened?"

Hiking had happened.

More accurately, falling while hiking. My friend rolled her ankle coming down the rocky crag of a mountain. She took some pain pills and hobbled around for a few days, but eventually with even the slightest movement, the pain caused her to recoil in tears as the doctor leaned in to assess the affected area.

"I know it doesn't feel good," the doctor said with a smile, cupping the ankle with one hand and gently touching the inflamed area. "But the pain is actually a good thing!"

Yes, spoken with a smile.

My friend and I still joke about the look she gave the doctor. It was as if a combination of her thoughts came out through her expression and her eyes. A mix of "Wait, what?" and "Well if pain is so good, lean in again, and I'll give you all the 'goodness' you can handle." Mercy.

The doctor went on, "The nerves in your ankle send pain signals to your brain. Your brain processes the pain as something is wrong, and you seek care for your trauma. It's really genius the way God created our bodies to respond to pain. If you sprained your ankle but didn't have pain, you would go about your daily activities and eventually experience a break or worse."

Until that day, I'd never heard anyone call pain good. I'd always thought of pain as discomfort to dodge at all costs or an ache to avoid with continuous doses of ibuprofen — not a tool designed by God for my good.

That day in the doctor's office, I realized that physical elements of pain often mirror the spiritual sorrow I experience when I ignore God's kindness in the discomfort of my distress.

Romans 2:4 explains it well. "Don't you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can't you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?"

God's kindness is what draws us to Himself in salvation, but God is also kind in the details of our day-to-day lives. I'm convinced He sometimes uses pain signals deep within our souls to call to us to seek help, seek Him and avoid further suffering.

It's sad to say, but:

  • We might never pay attention to an addiction until the pain of a destroyed life seems eminent.
  • We might never get hold of our anger or selfishness until the pain of a loved one leaving the relationship becomes our reality.

Maybe we feel an ache within, but over the years we've developed a high threshold for the pain. Or perhaps the stinging stopped because we're heavily medicated with "spiritual ibuprofen" — numbing the pain with whatever (or whomever) will give us temporary relief.

Can I Really Trust God?

August 28, 2018
Can I Really Trust God?
SHARON JAYNES

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." 1 John 4:18 (NIV)

I stood in the front yard waiting for the yelling to stop before I went back inside. Dad had been drinking again, and Mom was screaming at the top of her lungs.

Why couldn't he see how afraid I was? Why did he drink? Why did Mom yell? Why did they fight? After 17 years of these volcanic outbursts, you'd think I'd be used to it. But they always took me by surprise.

The day after one of their fights came with many tears and promises. "I'll never do it again," Dad said. "I am so sorry."

But there was always a next time. I learned I couldn't trust him.

Unfortunately, when I became a Christian, I had a difficult time trusting my heavenly Father as well.

Once we grasp the truth of God's amazing love for us, we come to the next question: Can I trust Him? Can I trust God with my hopes and fears, days and years? When we understand the depth of His love, the answer is always "yes." Perfect love drives away all fear, kicks it out the door, and gives it the boot (found in today's key verse, 1 John 4:18). I love how the Amplified, Classic translation expounds on 1 John 4:18:

"There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love's complete perfection]" (AMPC).

When I became a Christian, I could relate to the rejected Jesus and easily accept the indescribable gift He gave. I marveled at God's love. But trusting my heavenly Father with my hopes and dreams? That was a different story. For the longest time, when conflicts arose, I became that teenage girl looking in the crowd for a daddy who wasn't there. Could I trust this heavenly Father? I wasn't so sure.

But one day, God spoke to my heart in a poignant way. Take your earthly father's face off of Mine, He seemed to say. I am not like your earthly father. I am your heavenly Father. You can trust Me.

Here's what I learned about God:
He is always good.
He always tells the truth.
He wants what's best for me.
I can trust Him.

It's easy to trust God when life is good. But when a child rebels, the bank account dwindles, or the biopsy says the tumor is malignant, we wonder: Is God really good?

We know in our heads He is good, but the heart struggles to believe. The enemy of this world peddles the lie that God is not good — that He's holding out on us.

Penjelasan LAI - Meluruskan Fakta Yang Dipelintir Tentang Terjemahan LAI

Meluruskan Fakta Yang Dipelintir Tentang Terjemahan LAI

Salam Alkitab Untuk Semua.

Pdt. Anwar Tjen, PhD, Kepala Departemen Penerjemahan LAI

Lampiran 1.

Klinkert (1879): "Bahwa-sanja Allah djoega salamatkoe" (Yes 12:2).Terjemahan W.A.

Berbagai terjemahan modern juga mengikuti tradisi yang sama, misalnya, dalam bahasa Inggris: "the LORD" (New Jewish Publication Society Version; New Revised Standard Version, New International Version, New King James Version, Today's English Version); Jerman: "der HERR" (Einheitsübersetzung; die Bibel nach der Übersetzung Martin Luthers); Belanda: "de HEER" (Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling); Perancis": "le SEIGNEUR" (Traduction Oecuménique de la Bible).

Penutup

When We're Stuck In a Mess
LYSA TERKEURST

"Then the LORD said to me, 'You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north.'" Deuteronomy 2:2-3 (NIV)

We all have messes in our lives. Financial messes. Relationship messes. Health messes. Home messes. Business messes.

Messes that leave us feeling stuck. Like we may be stranded in this place of upheaval and unrest forever.

I'm sure that's how the people of Israel felt as they were wandering through the desert. Stuck in a mess with no end in sight. You've probably read or heard this story found in the book of Exodus. God had miraculously set the Israelites free from the oppression and bondage of slavery in Egypt. But their unwillingness to fully trust Him and their blatant refusal to take possession of the Promised Land landed them in quite a mess. A 40-year, desert-wandering mess.

Thankfully, we discover in the book of Deuteronomy that their story isn't over. Change is coming. The children of the Israelites, originally released from Pharaoh's tyranny, are finally about to take possession of the land God said was theirs all along. But before they move forward, Moses has everyone pause to look back. He knows he won't be going with them, so he wants to be sure to cement in their minds the faithfulness of God along their journey.

Moses reminds them of a time when they had been stuck circling the same mountain for too long. God spoke into their wandering and let them know it was time to head in a new direction.

"Then the LORD said to me, 'You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north'" (Deuteronomy 2:2-3).

It was a pivotal moment for them to remember. One where they had faced a life-changing choice. They could stay stuck, endlessly circling the same old place, or they could choose hope and head in a new direction with the Lord.

They could turn north.

I think this is the perfect time to pause and ask God if there's anywhere we need to "turn north" in our own lives. Have we been circling the same messes for years and years with no end in sight? Are there areas we know we need to change but feel like it will require too much sacrifice?

Here's a question we can ask ourselves right in the midst of our messes …

Am I letting this mess define me or refine me?

The answer to this question is crucial.

If I am letting a mess define me, I will feel hopeless.

If I am letting a mess refine me, I will be hopeful.

If the Israelites had looked at their 40-year track record of aimless wandering and defined themselves as rebellious failures, they would have lost all hope and kept right on circling. But because they embraced the correction and redirection of the Lord, they were able to turn around and move toward His promises with hope firmly planted in their hearts.

It's time for our messes to stop defining us.

It's time to embrace the refining process and turn north.

So how do we begin to turn north? We replace our old thoughts with empowering truths from God's Word.
