Jesus' disciples are often portrayed as a ragtag group of uneducated misfits. This made the transforming power of the Holy Spirit that much more apparent when they preached, as unschooled fishermen were suddenly speaking God's wisdom in the sanhedrin (Acts 4:13).

But not all of the early Christians were uneducated. Some, like Paul, were formally schooled in the law and well on their way to becoming prominent Jewish leaders.

And then there's Luke: the physician, companion of Paul, and traditional author of the Gospel of Luke and Acts. Even if the Bible didn't tell us he was a doctor (Colossians 4:14), his education shines through his writings. He uses precise medical terminology that was common in Greek medical texts, but is found nowhere else in the Bible. And his writings follow the model of the most reliable historical records of his time.

Some consider the Book of Acts a monumental work of ancient history.

Luke wasn't an eyewitness to Jesus' life or ministry, but he was fiercely dedicated to transmitting the facts as they were reported. He never includes himself in the gospel (outside of his introduction), and he only appears briefly in Acts.

So who was this minor biblical figure who played such an important role in producing the Bible?

Saint Luke, also known as Luke the Evangelist, is widely regarded as the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. He wrote more of the New Testament than anyone else—even the Apostle Paul.

Luke wasn't an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry, but he lived during the first century, and according to his own writings, he "carefully investigated everything from the beginning" (Luke 1:1–4). As a traveling companion of Paul, he also likely had direct access to the apostles and other accounts of Jesus' life and ministry (such as the Gospel of Mark).

While he was presumably educated as a physician (Colossians 4:14), today Luke is celebrated as one of the church's earliest historians. His methodical, detailed writings give us the only thorough record of what happened after Jesus ascended to heaven. Without his account in Acts, it would be hard to imagine how Christianity grew from a small, fragile movement within Judaism to what would eventually become the largest religion in the world.
